By Julie McKeel

Adrian Hernandez, MD
Dr. Adrian Hernandez has been selected as a winner of the 2004 William W. Parmley Young Author Achievement Award for his study Outcomes in Heart Failure Patients after Major Noncardiac Surgery published in the October 2004 Journal of the American College of Cardiology.

The award, named for Dr. William W. Parmley, Immediate Past Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology (JACC), honors two young authors per year, providing each award recipient with a stipend to defray the cost of attending an ACC educational event. The award is underwritten by the publisher of JACC - Elsevier Science Inc. The nominee must be lead author on a paper that was published in JACC in the preceding year, and must have completed training less than 5 years before the date that the paper was submitted. The papers selected best fulfill the standard criteria for acceptance for publication, including the paper's originality, methodology, presentation and importance.

The award recognizes not only Hernandez, but also the mentor for the project and the research program. For this particular project, Dr. James Jollis was the mentor. Drs. Chris O'Connor and David Whellan, faculty authors associated with this paper, were critical to the success of this project..

The Parmley Award will be given out at the ACC annual meeting in Orlando in March 2005. The award includes a stipend of $2,500 to attend an ACC educational event, as well as recognition at the Convocation Program, at the JACC Editorial Board meeting, and in JACC. Hernandez, the DCRI, and the Department of Cardiology will receive a plaque that acknowledges this accomplishment.
